If you’re torn between a full portrait session and a mini session, you’re definitely not alone. I get asked all the time, “Which one is better for my family?” The truth is, the answer depends on your family’s needs, and it can change as your kids grow and their attention spans evolve. Here’s a quick rundown of the differences between full and mini sessions, along with the pros of each, so you can decide what’s the best fit for your family.

Full Session or Mini Session? Let’s chat about it…

PROS:

  • Short & Sweet. Minis are perfect for families with little ones who might have a shorter attention span or anyone who just wants a few updated photos without the long session.

  • Easier on the wallet. Since mini sessions are shorter, they’re usually more affordable than full sessions, making them a great choice if you’re working with a budget but still want those gorgeous family photos.

  • Just need a few photos. You’ll get 20 stunning images that capture the best moments! And hey, if you’re loving more than 20, you can totally upgrade your gallery to get even more photos.

What’s a Mini Session? Mini sessions are usually around 20-30 minutes, making them perfect if you want a quick, fun photo experience without the long commitment. They’re great for getting a few key shots—like family pics, kids’ portraits, or couple photos—without all the extra time. Basically, it’s the perfect way to grab some great photos on a smaller scale!

CONS:

  • Limited locations. Unlike full sessions where I travel throughout the DMV, mini sessions are all about keeping it local & simple! I stick to a few select spots that are about 10 minutes from the 20714 zip code.

  • The pressure is ON. Time is limited, so if your little one isn’t feeling it, I don’t have much time to turn things around. But no worries—I’ll do everything I can to make it work and keep things fun!

  • Less diverse gallery. Your gallery won’t be as diverse as a full session—there’ll be fewer poses and shots of each type (family, the kids, kids alone, parents together, etc.)

PROS:

  • Locations, baby! No locations are off-limits for Full Sessions.

  • Don’t worry about a thing! We’ve got all the time in the world to let everyone relax, take breaks when needed, and catch those real, candid moments that just happen when you’re having fun!

  • Make it feel like YOU! Full sessions are the way to go if you want to have fun with it. We can switch up locations, play around with different poses, and even do outfit changes to really show off your family’s personality.

  • Did we just become best friends?? Yep!

What’s a Full Session? A full portrait session is a more laid-back, in-depth experience. It usually lasts about 60 minutes, giving us plenty of time to get a variety of shots, explore different locations, and capture tons of natural, candid moments. It’s perfect for families who want to spend more time together and get a wide range of photos—whether that’s close-ups, full family shots, or fun action shots. With a full session, there’s also time to plan outfits, play with props, and make the most of every moment!

CONS:

  • The cost! whomp, whomp $$$

  • Are we done yet?! know for some, photo sessions can feel like a bit of a chore. Even some family members (yes, non-kids too, haha) can get moody or tired. But don’t worry—I keep it fun; I’m a great time, I swear!

  • Too many photos. Such a good problem to have ;)
